Learn the basics

The six stitches every beginner needs

Running stitch

The foundation — a dashed line used for outlines and filling.

Backstitch

Solid, continuous line — best for outlines and text.

Satin stitch

Fills shapes with smooth, parallel stitches. Takes practice to keep even.

French knot

Tiny raised dots — used for flower centres, eyes, texture fills.

Stem stitch

Twisted line stitch — excellent for flower stems and curved outlines.

Lazy daisy

Loop stitches arranged in a circle to form petals — quick and distinctive.

Good to know

What to buy to get started

Option 1 — Buy a kit (easiest)

A beginner embroidery kit (£8–£20) includes hoop, fabric with a printed or stamped design, thread selection, and needle. Hobbycraft and Amazon have decent starter kits. Good if you want to start immediately without decisions.

Option 2 — Assemble yourself

  • Wooden embroidery hoop, 15–20cm — £3–£6
  • Embroidery needles (size 7–9) — £2
  • Cotton fabric or Aida cloth — £3–£5 per metre
  • DMC stranded cotton, 6–8 colours — £6–£16
  • Total: ~£14–£29

FAQs

Everything you need to know before you book.

Is embroidery hard to learn as a beginner?

No — hand embroidery is one of the most accessible crafts for beginners. The basic stitches (running stitch, backstitch, satin stitch, French knots) can be learned in an afternoon. You'll be making attractive hoop art within your first session. The learning curve is gentle compared to knitting or pottery.

What do I need to start embroidery?

A beginner embroidery kit costs £8–£20 and includes everything you need: embroidery hoop, needle, stranded cotton threads, and fabric. You can also assemble your own — a wooden hoop (£3–£6), embroidery needles (£2), and some Aida or cotton fabric, plus DMC stranded cotton from Hobbycraft (£1–£2 per skein).

What is the difference between embroidery and cross stitch?

Cross stitch is a specific type of embroidery where you make X-shaped stitches on a grid-weave fabric (usually Aida cloth) to build up a pixelated image. Hand embroidery covers a much wider range of stitches and techniques — satin stitch, French knots, stem stitch, and more — usually worked on plain fabric without a grid. Cross stitch is more formulaic; hand embroidery is more free-form.

Can I learn embroidery from an online course?

Yes — embroidery transfers very well to video learning. The stitches are clearly visible in close-up video, and pausing while you practise is genuinely effective. Domestika has strong embroidery courses from £7.99. Beginners can also find good free content on YouTube, though a structured course is easier to follow. Browse Domestika embroidery courses →

How long does it take to finish an embroidery project?

A small hoop (10–15cm) with a simple floral design takes 3–6 hours of stitching. A more detailed piece might take 10–20 hours spread over several sessions. Unlike pottery or glass blowing, embroidery is easily picked up and put down — it's ideal for an evening hobby.
