FAQs

Everything you need to know before you book.

Is foraging legal in the UK?

In most cases yes — foraging for personal use on public footpaths, common land, and open access land is generally permitted under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. You cannot uproot plants (requires landowner permission) and certain SSSIs have restrictions. Commercial foraging and picking in quantities beyond personal use requires separate permissions. A guided course will cover the local rules for your area.

When is the best time of year to go foraging in the UK?

Spring (March–May) is excellent for shoots, wild garlic, wood sorrel and nettles. Summer brings elderflower, berries and mushrooms. Autumn is the most abundant season overall — blackberries, sloes, crab apples, hazelnuts and the peak of mushroom season. Winter has fewer options but rosehips, haws and some evergreen herbs remain. Year-round foragers are never short of something to find.

Do I need experience to go on a foraging course?

No — virtually all beginner foraging courses are designed for people with zero prior knowledge. A good guide will teach you to identify species safely, explain what to avoid, and show you how to process and eat what you find. The most important rule — never eat anything you're not 100% certain of — is reinforced throughout every reputable course. Browse foraging courses on CraftCourses →
