Which loom to start with
Frame loom (tapestry loom)
£10–£30Best for: Absolute beginners, wall hangings and small tapestry pieces
A simple wooden frame with nails or notches — you warp it yourself and weave by hand or with a shed stick. No moving parts. The ideal starting point before committing to a larger loom.
Rigid heddle loom
£80–£250Best for: Intermediate weavers who want to make fabric, scarves, and towels
A tabletop loom with a rigid heddle that raises and lowers the warp in a single motion — significantly faster than a frame loom. Ashford and Schacht are the most popular brands in the UK.
Multi-shaft floor loom
£400–£3,000+Best for: Experienced weavers wanting complex patterns and full fabric production
Four or more shafts allow complex pattern weaving — twill, houndstooth, and intricate structures. Not for beginners. Usually bought secondhand once you know you're committed.

Weaving workshops in the UK
Weaving workshops are less common than pottery or jewellery but widely available through CraftCourses. Types range from tapestry weaving tasters (2–3 hours, from £45) to full-day frame loom workshops (£80–£150) and multi-day rigid heddle intensives. Scotland has particularly strong workshop availability, with several weavers offering courses connected to traditional Scottish textile heritage.
