What type of loom should a beginner buy?
A frame loom (also called a tapestry loom or rigid heddle loom) is the most beginner-friendly starting point. A small 20–30cm frame loom costs £10–£25 and is suitable for wall hangings and small tapestry pieces. Rigid heddle looms (£80–£200) are the next step up for weavers who want to make fabric and garments. Shaft looms are for experienced weavers only.

Is weaving difficult to learn?
Basic weaving — interlacing warp and weft threads on a simple frame — is learnable in an afternoon. Creating consistent tension and even selvedges (the edges) takes more practice. What is the difference between weaving and macramé?
Weaving uses a loom to interlace warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads — the structure comes from the crossing of threads. Macramé uses knotting techniques with no loom. Both produce wall hangings and textural pieces, but the processes, tools, and results are quite different.

Can you learn weaving from an online course?
Yes — particularly for tapestry and frame loom weaving. The technique is visual and the structure of warp and weft is easy to see on video.
