How a rug tufting workshop works
Design your pattern
Draw or transfer your design onto the tufting cloth stretched over a frame. Simple geometric shapes and letters work well for beginners.
Tuft with the gun
The tufting gun punches yarn through the cloth at speed. Run it along your drawn lines in smooth, even passes — like drawing with yarn.
Cut pile (optional)
For cut pile, shear the loops with scissors or an electric trimmer to create a velvety texture. Loop pile rugs skip this step.
Back and finish
Apply rug backing adhesive (or latex) to lock the tufts in place. Once dry, trim the edges and add a fabric backing to finish.
Before buying a tufting gun (£80–£200), a workshop lets you try the process first — all equipment provided from £50.
