Heritage

Somerset — the heart of British basketry

The Somerset Levels have been growing willow for basket making for over 2,000 years. The flat, waterlogged fields produce the most consistent weaving willow in Britain — particularly around Stoke St Gregory, the historic centre of the trade. At its Victorian peak, Somerset supplied willow for everything from fish crates to laundry baskets to champagne cases. Today, a small number of commercial growers sustain the tradition, supplying both professional basket makers and course participants.

P.H. Coate & Son in Stoke St Gregory is the best-known surviving family grower. Somerset Willow operates a visitor centre and runs regular workshops — one of the most authentic willow weaving experiences available in the UK.

What to expect

The six stages of making a basket

1

Staking up

Inserting upright rods (stakes) into the base to form the frame of the basket walls.

2

Upsetting

Bending the stakes upright and securing them — this sets the shape and height of the piece.

3

Weaving (waling)

Working willow rods in and out of the stakes to build up the sides. The most meditative part of the process.

4

Foot border

A plaited border at the base that holds the stakes and gives the basket its structural integrity.

5

Top border

The finishing border at the top — multiple styles (3-rod, 4-rod, rolled) give different finishes.

6

Handle fitting

Inserting a handle bow and wrapping it in willow — the defining detail of a traditional basket.

Willow Weaving

FAQs

Everything you need to know before you book.

What is willow weaving?

Willow weaving (also called basket weaving or basketry) uses lengths of willow rods — grown specifically for weaving — to create baskets, trugs, furniture, sculptures, and garden structures. Somerset is the historic centre of the UK willow industry, with a tradition stretching back centuries. The material is flexible when soaked and rigid once dried, making it forgiving to work with.

How much does a willow weaving course cost in the UK?

A one-day willow weaving workshop costs £70–£140, typically producing a small basket or trug. Weekend courses (£150–£300) allow larger or more complex pieces. Most courses are held in rural settings and include all willow and materials. CraftCourses has the best selection of UK willow weaving workshops, particularly in Somerset, Devon, and Wales. Do I need any experience to try willow weaving?

No experience needed. Willow weaving is one of the most beginner-friendly heritage crafts — the material is forgiving, the basic techniques (staking, upsetting, weaving, border) can be learned in a day, and most people leave with a completed piece. The learning curve is more about patience than technical skill. Find a willow weaving workshop →

What is the difference between willow weaving and basket weaving?

Willow weaving specifically uses willow rods grown for the purpose. Basket weaving is a broader term covering any material — rush, cane (rattan), seagrass, hedgerow materials, or commercially grown willow. Most UK workshops marketed as "basket weaving" use willow. Rush basketry and cane work are distinct traditions with different techniques and materials.

Can I grow my own willow for weaving?

Yes — Salix triandra (almond willow) and Salix viminalis (common osier) are the main varieties grown for basket making in the UK. They grow rapidly and can be coppiced annually to produce weaving rods. Somerset Willow and P.H. Coate & Son are both UK suppliers of basket willow rods if you don't want to grow your own.
