The short version

A silver ring making class runs 2.5–3 hours. You work with real sterling silver — cutting, shaping, texturing, soldering — and leave wearing a ring you made yourself. No experience needed. Costs £55–£85 outside London, £75–£110 in London. ClassBento has the widest UK selection.

What happens in a silver ring making class

1

Choose your design

Most studios offer a choice of ring width and texture style — plain band, hammered finish, stamped pattern, or twisted wire. Your instructor helps you choose something achievable in the session time.

2

Cut and shape the silver

You cut a strip of sterling silver sheet or wire to length, then wrap it around a mandrel (a tapered steel rod) to form the ring shape. This takes around 20–30 minutes.

3

Add texture

Optional but popular — hammering with a textured hammer, stamping with letter or pattern stamps, or filing decorative grooves into the surface before soldering.

4

Solder the join

The ring ends are brought together and soldered with a torch using silver solder. Your instructor supervises closely and may guide your hands on your first solder. This is the part most beginners find nerve-wracking — and most satisfying when it works.

5

Size and finish

The ring is hammered on the mandrel to achieve the right size and shape, then filed smooth. A final polish on a buffing wheel brings out the silver shine. You leave wearing it.

Tips for getting the most from your class

✓ Measure ring sizes beforehand

If you're making a ring as a gift, measure the recipient's finger circumference in mm the night before. Wrap a thin strip of paper around the finger and measure where it overlaps.

✓ Go for a narrower band first

A 2–3mm band is easier to control and solder than a wider cuff. Save the wider designs for a second class when soldering feels comfortable.

✓ Don't rush the soldering

The join needs to be perfectly flush before you apply heat. Take an extra minute to get it right — a good join makes polishing much easier.

✓ Wear flat shoes

You'll be standing at a workbench for 2.5 hours. Comfort matters more than you expect in a studio setting.

Silver ring making

FAQs

Everything you need to know before you book.

How long does a silver ring making class take?

Most silver ring making taster sessions take 2.5–3 hours. You spend around 30–45 minutes shaping and texturing the silver, then solder and finish the ring. Some studios run faster-paced 2-hour sessions; longer sessions (3.5 hours) usually include a second technique like stamping or stone setting.

What do you actually make in a silver ring making class?

You make a real sterling silver ring to take home and wear. Most classes work with 1–2mm silver wire or sheet — you cut, shape, texture (hammering, stamping, or filing), solder the join closed, then polish to a finished shine. You choose the size, width, and texture style.

How much does a silver ring making class cost?

UK silver ring making classes cost £55–£110 depending on location. London is at the higher end (£75–£110); outside London, expect £55–£85. All classes include silver, tools, and instruction. Some studios charge extra for more silver (wider rings) — check before booking.

Is silver ring making hard for a beginner?

No prior metalwork experience is needed. The hardest part for most beginners is soldering the join — your instructor guides you through it step by step and handles the torch in more cautious studios. Most people successfully make a wearable ring in their first session.

Can I make a silver ring for someone else's finger size?

Yes — most classes let you make the ring to a specified size. Give the finger circumference in mm or the ring size (UK sizing A–Z). You can also size the ring slightly larger and have it professionally sized afterwards at a jeweller.

Is a silver ring making class a good gift?

It's one of the most consistently well-reviewed gift experiences in the UK — you produce something real, personal, and immediately wearable.
