Each skill unlocks the next. Don't skip ahead.
Long-tail cast-on
⏱ 15–30 minsThe most useful cast-on for beginners — produces a neat, elastic edge. Takes 15–30 minutes to learn. There are other cast-ons, but start here.
Knit stitch (k)
⏱ 1–2 hrs to feel comfortableThe fundamental stitch — insert needle from left to right, wrap yarn, pull through, slip off. Knitting every row creates garter stitch (the ridged fabric).
Purl stitch (p)
⏱ 1 hr once you know knitThe knit stitch worked in reverse. Alternating knit and purl rows creates stocking stitch — the smooth, classic fabric used in most garments.
Casting off (plain cast-off)
⏱ 20 minsSecuring the final row so stitches don't unravel. Simple once you know knit stitch — knit 2, pass first over second, repeat across.
Increasing (yarn over / kfb)
⏱ 30 mins eachAdding stitches to shape your work — essential for anything other than rectangles. Two methods: yarn over (creates a hole/eyelet) and knit front and back (solid increase).
Decreasing (k2tog / ssk)
⏱ 30 mins eachRemoving stitches to shape. K2tog leans right; ssk leans left. Used in pairs for symmetrical shaping in hats, sleeves, and necklines.

Best first knitting projects

How to read a knitting pattern
Knitting patterns look intimidating but follow a consistent structure once you know the conventions.
CO 20 sts Cast on 20 stitches — your starting row.
K to end Knit every stitch to the end of the row.
P2, K2 (rep to end) Purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches, repeat that sequence to the end of the row.
RS / WS Right side (the public-facing side) and wrong side. Most patterns tell you which side you're working on.
k2tog Knit two stitches together — a right-leaning decrease that reduces your stitch count by one.
yo Yarn over — creates a new stitch and a small eyelet hole. Used in lace patterns.
*K3, P1; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2 The asterisk marks the start of a repeat. Work the instructions between * and ; until 2 stitches remain, then knit those 2.
